The Palace The Palace was built partly by the Nayaks of Vijayanagar in 1550 AD, and partly by the Marathas. Adjacent to the temple the palace is a series of large and rambling buildings of fine masonry. The entrance is by way of a huge quadrangular courtyard. The surrounding walls are pierced by big gate to the north and east. The courtyard leads to a many-pillared hall. A small inner courtyard gives access to a large one.
Saraswathi Mahal Library The library has the proud privilege of being home to one of the most important oriental manuscripts collections in India. Founded in 1700 AD it contains paper manuscripts in Indian and European languages besides a collection of over 44,000 palm leaves.
Tamil University The university was founded in 1981 for conducting research and advanced study in Tamil.
